Taste on Sussex Lane – Sydney, Bar & Restaurant Review
Posted on July 17, 2011 in Featured, French by Eating in Sydney.

The very first Taste Baguette restaurant opened in Surry Hills with a goal of providing the freshest baguettes in Sydney, baked every 15 minutes during lunch and filled with only the freshest ingredients. Since then Taste Baguette has grown to 10 stores, including the one we visited on Sussex Lane off Kent Street in the Sydney CBD.

Rare Roast Angus Beef Baguette ($10.50)
With rocket, tomato and onion marmalade.
Just looking at the menu, it’s easy to see why Taste Baguette has the slogan “a French love affair with Vietnamese flavours”. There are many delicious French and Vietnamese inspired baguettes and dishes to choose from.
On this occasion we chose the two specials on offer; Rare Roast Angus Beef Baguette and Provencale Fish Stew. The baguette (shown above), as expected, was incredibly fresh and full of flavour. While the Wagyu Beef was a wonderful change, the Lemongrass Beef and Chicken Baguettes are still our favourites. If you do go to Taste, I highly recommend you try the Lemongrass Chicken!

Provencale Fish Stew ($24.00)
With rouille and crusty baguette.
Now on the freezing Winter’s day that it was, I was very very happy to see the Provencale Fish Stew on the specials menu! What could better than a piping hot stew on a cold day? :) I found this particular stew to be very tasty (pardon the pun!). There was a variety of seafood in the dish, including mussels, scallops, fish and prawns, and the soup itself wasn’t too thick or gluggy. Dipping the fresh crunchy baguette into the stew and eating was an absolute delight.
Before I finish this review, I want to point out the interior of the restaurant itself. As you can see from the first photo, it’s a stunning fusion of modern materials and old-school Victorian furnishings. They even have bird cages hanging from the ceiling! Now I know that may sound weird to some, but trust me, its all comes together to form a beautiful, eclectic ambience that really helps separate Taste on Sussex Lane from other diners.

yum love the look of the fish stew! would love to grab a spoon and dig in!
some of my favourite baguette sandwiches in Sydney are found right here :-)
@chocolatesuze – That’s exactly how I felt when it first came out! It’s one of those dishes that you begin eating just with your eyes.
@Simon – Ditto. Most of their baguettes are just delicous!
