There are certain moments in life then most men absolutely treasure. These include things like fishing, cooking steak on a BBQ, cracking opening a cold beer while sitting in front of the television and digging in a giant, juicy, delicious schnitzel. That’s where Essen Restaurant & Beer Cafe comes in!

Cabbage Salad (complimentary)

Every meal at Essen starts with a complimentary cabbage salad, lightly drizzled with chilli powder. While some of my mates dislike this starter, I think it’s great. It’s simple and has a crisp, fresh taste with just enough zing from the chilli.

Chicken Jaeger Schnitzel ($22.50)
With potato roesti and creamy mushroom sauce.

And then comes the holy grail. In this case a Chicken Jaeger Schnitzel. Essen, in my opinion, is home to the biggest schnitzels you’ll find in Sydney. And whats more, they taste freaking great too. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but that plate is actually quite large and the schnitzel pretty much extends to the full length of it. Damn!

Now unlike some schnitzels which are 20% meat and 80% batter, the schnitzels at Essen are the perfect balance of juicy succulent meat, lightly coated in beautiful, crumby goodness. Which after drenching with the creamy mushroom sauce and combining with the potato roesti, makes for an absolutely mouthwatering meal.

So if you’re ever heading out for a night of fun in the city, I do recommend you pop into Essen beforehand for a beer and schnitzel. If anything, it will ensure your stomach is happily content for what the rest of the night has to offer.

P.S Essen used to be called Una’s a number of years ago but has since gone it’s own way. Una’s still remains in Darlinghurst, though, and offers a menu very much like Essen. The quality of food at both restaurants is equally great, so if you don’t fancy a trip to Ultimo, then head over to Una’s at Darlinghurst instead.
