Funny thing happened on my trip to Japan last year. No matter what the night entailed – be it dinners and deserts, izakaya, karaoke while eating honey chocolate ice cream loafs, whatever – I always found myself finishing the night off with a nice bowl of ramen from one of the many Ichiran restaurants. It’s like a Japanese version of the desert stomach – there is always room for ramen!
Since then I’ve been on the lookout for great ramen here in Sydney. Apart from the usual suspects (Gumshara and Ryo’s), the one other standout for me has been Ippudo. In fact, it’s the closest in taste and consistency to Ichiran in my opinion.
This photo doesn’t really do it justice, however, I can assure you that this is one tasty ramen. Unlike Gumshara, which is overwhelmingly packed with flavour (which isn’t a bad thing!), I find Ippudo’s ramen to be a little milder and easier to eat. The noodles are also beautifully thin which is a bonus. In fact the one and only fault I can find is that the bowls aren’t big enough :)
Aside from the ramen, Ippudo have a lot of other dishes, such as the crab karaage above. Which was nice, but chicken is still my favourite type of karaage, by a long shot.
The other very notable dish to mention at Ippudo is their pork bun. Which is soooooo damn yummy, that I always forget to take a photo first before biting into it. I promise I’ll get a photo next time and upload here, but trust me, you have to try it. It’s a little on the expensive side given it’s just a simple little pork bun, but my God is it worth it!
