They always say that it’s not what you know, but who you know. While that’s not entirely true, friends and colleagues do come in handy when it comes to restaurant recommendations. As was the case when I asked a work colleague about some of her favourite Italian restaurants.
Tappo Osteria was one of the restaurants she mentioned, which to my surprise was located in the same street as where I was living at the time, so naturally I decided to check it out – not once, not twice, but three times :)
I’ve had been told that Tappo Osteria is somehow affiliated with Lucio Pizzeria in Darlinghurst (which is my favourite pizza restaurant in Sydney) so I had really high expectations for this restaurant, and thankfully it didn’t disappoint.
Being a lover of Italian food, I naturally had to order the margherita pizza. While it tasted nice, I still prefer the pizza at Lucio’s (and Via Napoli in Lane Cover). This pizza just didn’t have that super thin and perfectly cooked soft crust that Lucio’s offer. But again, it’s by no means a bad tasting pizza. Not in the slightest!
Pasta Special of the Day
Now this is where the restaurant really shines! Both the pasta dishes that I ordered on separate occasions, were absolutely delicious. The sauce has a slightly softer creamy-but-not-creamy-at-all taste. It’s hard to describe, but its nothing like the heavy napolitana sauces you get everywhere else. In fact, this sauce comes really damn close to the pasta dishes I’ve tasted in Sicily. Love it, love it, love it!
In terms of ambience, the restaurant is fairly modern, but with touches of rustic wooden decor to give it some charm. The staff are all Italian and greet you with the usual ‘buonasera’ when you arrive, which I think is great. The restaurant is pretty small with limited seating so I do suggest you make a booking early. And when you’re there, please please please try the pasta!
